What is known about the "Godzilla Minus One" sequel.

Director Takashi Yamazaki returns once again to the story of the Shikishima family and of a Japan trying to recover after the war and the monster’s attack. The events of the new Godzilla film unfold two years after the previous film, and the project becomes the first Japanese production shot as part of the Filmed For IMAX program.

How Yamazaki develops the story after the international success of the first film, and what, beyond large-scale destruction, may make the new “Godzilla” interesting — read in DeTalks’ article.

“Godzilla Minus One” was released in 2023 and grossed more than 116 million dollars at the worldwide box office. In 2024, the film won an “Oscar” for best visual effects, becoming the first Asian film to win in this category.

In the sequel, Takashi Yamazaki combines the roles of director, screenwriter, and head of visual effects. The effects are also handled by the SHIROGUMI studio, while production is carried out by Toho Studios and ROBOT.

The Shikishima family faces a new threat

Yamazaki brings back the characters of the previous installment to the screen. Indeed, "Godzilla Minus Zero" is set in 1949. Ryunosuke Kamiki once again plays Koichi Shikishima, while Noriko is played by Minami Hamabe. In the first film, former pilot Shikishima returns to ruined Tokyo, where he meets Noriko and little Akiko. Their shared care for the child gradually turns them into a family.

For Koichi, the fight against Godzilla is tied to the guilt of having survived. What he went through in the war keeps him from accepting his loved ones and imagining his own future.

The family’s return gives the sequel personal stakes: the new disaster threatens the life the heroes have already managed to build. The film’s official synopsis speaks of the fragile peace people have won after a long recovery and now risk losing again.

Postwar Japan and new characters

The consequences of the war remain part of the story. Min Tanaka also joins the cast, playing the biologist Kanji Murakami. According to the creators, the character carries deep psychological wounds caused by the war.

Other familiar heroes return as well. The scientist Kenji Noda, played by Hidetaka Yoshioka, now heads the disaster response bureau. Shikishima’s neighbor Sumiko Ota, performed by Sakura Ando, runs a local orphanage. The sequel also features members of the Shinsei Maru crew — Shiro Mizushima and Captain Seiji Akitsu.

The heroes, in particular, are building their lives after what they endured: they look after children, work, and prepare to protect others. Against this backdrop, the monster’s return threatens the results of their recovery. The sequel thus develops the theme of the first film — how to go on living when the immediate danger has passed but its consequences remain.

The new IMAX scale

"Godzilla Minus Zero" becomes the first Japanese production in the Filmed For IMAX program. The film is shot with certified digital cameras, and the image and sound are prepared specifically for this format.

In IMAX theaters, the big screen and immersive sound enhance the sense of presence. Specially prepared scenes also open up more space above and below the frame than the regular widescreen version. For “Godzilla,” this is a chance to emphasize the monster’s size next to the city and its people.

The Japanese release date is tied to the franchise’s history: the first Godzilla film came out on November 3, 1954. There is no information about a Ukrainian release yet, but the film’s international release covers dozens of countries. In particular, on November 5, Godzilla Minus Zero will open in theaters in Germany and Czechia, and on November 6 — in Poland, Austria, and the United Kingdom.
