When Ethical Questions Find Technical Solutions: How Film Replaced Live Animals

For decades, film relied on live animals during shoots. For a long time, big-budget projects and paychecks let everyone look the other way, but protests from animal rights advocates and scandals forced the film industry to search for ethical ways to replace its furry actors. Animals Aren't Film Actors
According to data from the animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), animals used in filming are often taken from their mothers as babies and trained intensively. Meanwhile, conditions at training facilities are described as 'deplorable and lacking basic care.'
Experts stress that using wild animals isn't just morally questionable but dangerous, since training can't suppress natural instincts. During filming of 'Roar' (1981), for instance, lions and tigers attacked more than 70 crew members. Director Noel Marshall was among those injured, and his assistant narrowly avoided serious harm.
Technology — from animatronics (robotic models) to CGI (computer-generated imagery) — makes it possible to create realistic characters without exploiting living creatures. According to PETA, it's exactly these modern capabilities that shape a more ethical approach to depicting living creatures on screen.
The First Attempts
The idea of replacing real animals with special constructions came to film from theater, where actors portrayed creatures using costumes or hand puppets. These mechanical solutions laid the groundwork for the technologies that followed.
In the film 'Gorillas in the Mist' (1988), for instance, toy replicas of a baby gorilla were created, and in some shots, human actors wore realistic costumes.
Techniques like these were also used in later projects, such as 'Instinct' (1999). The team developed anatomically accurate, life-size animal costumes. What's more, shorter-statured actors were cast to portray baby gorillas for the sake of realism.
But methods like these had limits: physical human proportions couldn't replicate certain animal traits, like a horse's build or a cat's detailed facial expressions. So they were used more often to portray fantastical or unrealistic creatures in older films like 'King Kong' (1933) or 'Godzilla' (1954).
'Living' Mechanisms
When costumes and models weren't enough, puppets started getting mechanical hearts built into them. That's how animatronics came about — robotic models that can mimic a living subject's movements or behavior without its involvement.
In the 1964 film 'Mary Poppins', Disney used animatronic thrushes to create more controlled, realistic effects of birds interacting with actors and their surroundings.
One of the most notable examples of progress in animatronics was the mechanical horse puppets made by Creature Effects. The developers created a model that won a Scientific and Technical Academy Award. The robots kept actors safe and added realism to complex scenes, particularly in films like 'Seabiscuit' (2003) and 'True Grit' (2010).
In the film 'War Horse,' for instance, real horses appeared for most of the screen time. But in a scene where the animal lies on muddy ground, pinned by wooden beams and tangled in straps, the studio, for ethical reasons, used a realistic animatronic instead. Lighting and special effects did the rest — the horse experienced no discomfort or unnecessary stress.
For less dynamic scenes, animatronics like these could also produce lifelike eye movements, ear twitches, chewing, and even simulated breathing.
From an ethical standpoint, animatronics reduced risk to animals, and directors gained full control over staging. But it too had its limits — high costs, complex operation, and sometimes a mechanical 'coldness' to its movement compared to a living creature.
The Birth of Computer Graphics on Screen
CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) means exactly what it says — images created using computers. This technology makes it possible to recreate complex scenes without needing real objects or creatures.
One example of a hybrid approach combining CGI and practical effects is 'Jurassic Park' (1993). A team led by makeup artist Stan Winston created massive animatronic dinosaurs, including a 20-foot T. rex with a metal frame and latex skin.
The studio Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) supplemented the film's scenes with digital dinosaur models for wide shots and scenes involving a lot of movement. During the T. rex attack, for instance, close-up shots used animatronics, while wide shots used CGI.
Later films, like 'Jurassic World: Dominion,' further refined this integration. Animatronics and CGI were created using shared software to keep their appearance and movement consistent.
Digitally Transforming a Human Into an Animal
A new breakthrough for film was motion capture technology. In the film 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,' for instance, the ape Caesar was created based on Andy Serkis's performance. The actor wore a special suit fitted with sensors that captured the character's movements, facial expressions, and gestures.
The animation team then applied that data to a 3D model, creating a digital creature with realistic fur and emotion. The technique became the foundation for the entire series, including 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' and its sequels.
The main drawbacks of this method were its high cost, the need for talented animators, and criticism that digital creatures 'feel less alive' than real ones.
But contemporary film is increasingly moving away from live creatures in favor of CGI. Examples include the films 'The Call of the Wild' (2020), where the studio MPC created a fully digital dog. In 'The One and Only Ivan' (2020), meanwhile, the animals were recreated as 3D models with realistic fur.
In the films 'The Jungle Book' (2016) and 'The Lion King' (2019), studios went even further, combining CGI with virtual production. Actors worked on virtual sets, and every animal was digital.
What's Next
Today, film uses 3D scanning and neural network tools. These generate movement, build digital models, and power interactive animation systems.
