The European Athletics Championships kicked off with Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Oleksandr Pohorilko and others.

The second day of the European Athletics Indoor Championships has wrapped up in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. Across it, Ukraine competed in four events: women's high jump, the women's and men's 400 metres, and the men's triple jump.

In the high jump, reigning Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Ukrainian champion Kateryna Tabashnyk opened their campaigns, while in the 400 metres Oleksandr Pohorilko set a new national record.

The DeTalks team has rounded up all of the Ukrainians' performances at the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships on the March 7 competition day. The day one review is available here.

Ukrainian Results on Day 2 of the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships

  • The Ukrainian high jumpers opened the competition day on March 7, but for the first time in history only one of the three national representatives advanced to the final — Yaroslava Mahuchikh. It took the athlete just one jump, at 1.89 metres. Clearing it on her first attempt, Mahuchikh had the shortest qualification of her career.

Yuliia Chumachenko, meanwhile, bowed out at 1.85 metres, while Kateryna Tabashnyk stopped at 1.89.
  • Next up for Ukraine on day two of the 2025 European Indoor Championships were the 400m runners — Tetyana Melnyk and Oleksandr Pohorilko. Tetyana was eliminated right in the qualification: she placed sixth in her heat and also stepped over the line on the first bend, for which she was later disqualified.

Pohorilko also failed to advance to the semi-final — he finished third in 46.32 seconds. Even so, Oleksandr set a new national record, beating by 0.13 seconds the previous best that Vitaliy Butrym had held since 2018.
  • Oleksandr Pohorilko has also wrapped up his performances at the European championships — he placed tenth in the qualification, where he needed to make the top 8 to reach the final. Speaking to Suspilne Sport afterwards, the athlete admitted that he competed with a fever and therefore could not jump beyond 15.94 metres.

On the penultimate, third day of the European Athletics Indoor Championships, March 8, Ukraine will be represented in just one final in Apeldoorn — Oleh Doroshchuk and Dmytro Nikitin will contest the high jump final at 21:09 Kyiv time.
