Ukraine is now down to a single representative in the singles draw at the tournament in France.

Ukrainian tennis players Nikita Bilozertsev and Yelyzaveta Kotliar began their matches at Junior Roland Garros 2025. The athletes played their first-round matches on Sunday, June 1.

The Junior French Open is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments — the year's biggest tennis events, which, together with the Australian Open, US Open, and Wimbledon, bring together the world's best young tennis players under 18.

Two Ukrainians made it into the main draw of this year's tournament in Paris: 16-year-old Nikita Bilozertsev (seed No. 14) and 18-year-old Yelyzaveta Kotliar.

How Bilozertsev and Kotliar Played in the First Round of Junior Roland Garros 2025

  • The first-round match at Roland Garros 2025 marked Bilozertsev's second appearance at a junior major, and his first in France. The tennis player had previously only played at the Australian Open, where he lost in the very first round.
  • In Paris, after an even start to the first set, Nikita and his first-round opponent, Serbia's Ognjen Milic, traded holds on serve. A series of breaks followed, but it was the Ukrainian who came out on top — taking the lead 4:3, then closing out the set, 6:4.

In the second set, Milic took an early lead with a break (3:0), but gave up two consecutive break points within the set, ultimately letting Bilozertsev secure his debut win at a junior Grand Slam — 6:4, 6:4.

  • This marked Yelyzaveta Kotliar's second appearance at Junior Roland Garros. Last year, the athlete reached the second round of the clay-court major.
  • In the first round, the Ukrainian faced the Czech Republic's seventh seed, Jana Kovačková. The players stayed even on points at the start of the match, but in the closing stages of the first set, the Czech pulled ahead with a break. In the second set, though, Kotliar staged a comeback — taking a 5:0 lead before restoring parity in the match, 6:2.

The decisive set saw almost no holds on serve, but it was 14-year-old Kovačková who came out on top in the exchange of breaks. The Czech held three match points at 6:5 in her favor, ultimately winning the last point of the match.
