The rise of the Young Adult genre: what its authors write about, and which Ukrainian books deserve attention.

The Young Adult (YA) genre's popularity grows every year, turning it into one of the most powerful segments of the book market. Today's youth, meanwhile, increasingly turn to literature that reflects their own experiences, feelings, and social challenges.

The DeTalks team looked into why YA captivates readers so much, and which Ukrainian writers work in this genre.

Young Adult is literature aimed at teenagers and young people between the ages of 12 and 18, though adults read it too. These books cover themes of personal growth, relationships, fighting stereotypes, social inequality, and important life choices.

YA's success is explained by its emotional depth, easy readability, and ability to resonate with readers' personal experience.

What Themes Dominate YA Literature

Contemporary YA authors increasingly focus on themes like mental health, environmental issues, gender identity, and inclusivity. Novels by John Green and Becky Albertalli, for instance, explore problems of depression, self-perception, and social challenges their protagonists face.

Although dystopias are growing in popularity alongside this, such as Suzanne Collins's 'Hunger Games,' Kiera Cass's 'The Selection,' Veronica Roth's 'Divergent,' or Tahereh Mafi's 'Shatter Me' series, this genre shouldn't be confused with Young Adult. These books instead emphasize an individual's struggle against a system of power or society, one generally aimed at destroying each character's own sense of self.

The emergence of new themes in YA literature has driven a trend of using sharp social issues as the basis for plot. Authors have started addressing psychological problems that anyone could face in their books, as well as the human mental state more broadly.

Ukrainian Authors and Books in the YA Genre

More and more YA literature is emerging in Ukraine as well. Nadiika Herbish's stories about self-discovery, for instance, have been recognized with national and international awards.

Volodymyr Arieniev, meanwhile, in his 'Sapiens,' tells the story of ordinary Kyiv schoolchildren who love discovering new things, not always things they're allowed to, creating unique worlds that raise social issues.

Sofia Andrukhovych, in 'Kurka's Constellation,' meanwhile, offers an alternative take on the youth experience, blending realism with philosophical motifs. The protagonist of her work isn't a teenager, but rather an elderly grandmother, Maria, who lives alone in the mountains with her hen, Marichka.

In Nataliia Matolinets's book 'Hessy,' the protagonist chooses her own path in a world of magic and intrigue: finding herself where ordinary people cross paths with gods, trying to understand herself, and choosing whether to follow her own road or live up to others' expectations.
